Okuhida Onsenkyo

Okuhida Onsenkyo refers collectively to the hot spring villages of Hirayu, Fukuchi, Shin-Hirayu, Tochio, and Shin-Hotaka, which are scattered in a V-shape along the western foothills of the 3,000-meter-class Northern Alps. Blessed with clear blue skies and the majestic Northern Alps, Okuhida Onsenkyo boasts abundant hot spring water, forming a paradise of about 100 open-air baths. From the harsh winters to the inspiring fresh greenery of spring, the cool summers feel like another world. The mountains, layered with fiery autumn leaves and fresh snow, create a three-tiered beauty. In winter, visitors can relax in the baths while admiring the snow-covered Northern Alps. This onsen village delights visitors throughout the four seasons and is well equipped with many leisure and tourist facilities. Notably, Okuhida Onsenkyo is home to Japan’s only two-story gondola, the Shin-Hotaka Ropeway. Stretching 3,171 meters, this ropeway offers a panoramic view of nature and swiftly carries passengers up to 2,156 meters. From there, the towering peaks of the Northern Alps create a magnificent natural symphony. Also nearby is the Norikura Skyline, Japan’s top mountain highway, providing easy access to a heavenly world above the clouds. For walks, there are attractions such as the Hirayu Great Waterfall, the Hirayu Folk Museum, Okuhida Bear Ranch where you can see over 100 Asiatic black bears, and a village themed on old folk tales. Walking and trekking courses are well maintained, offering a variety of options from gentle strolls to challenging mountain treks, suited to individual fitness and leisure time.
