Shikemichi

"Shikemichi is a historic merchant district located in Nagono, Nishi Ward, Nagoya City. It was established in 1610 alongside the construction of Nagoya Castle. The name “Shikemichi” (literally ""four ken street"") comes from the widening of the road to about 7 meters (four ken, a traditional unit of length) after a major fire in 1700 as a fire prevention measure. Today, it retains a strong Edo-period atmosphere with white-walled storehouses and traditional townhouses built on stone foundations. It is designated as a Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in Nagoya."
