Kōya no Namihō

This is a small workshop located in Tokoname City on the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture. The entire process—from cultivating dye plants in the field, producing the dye, to the actual dyeing—is carried out on the Chita Peninsula. The studio uses Tokoname-yaki pottery jars and local materials such as Chita cotton, sake from the region, and ash, demonstrating a deep commitment to local crafting techniques. For indigo dyeing, they adhere to the traditional method known as “natural indigo ferment vat”, using “sukumo”—a homemade dye made by fermenting the leaves of Polygonum tinctorium (indigo plant). Only natural materials are used, with no synthetic chemicals whatsoever. Reservations are required for hands-on indigo dyeing experiences, which are available upon request.
