Handweaving Village: Momenkura Chita

Japan, 9 Nakatani, Okada, Chita City, Aichi Prefecture 478-0021

The building used as “Handweaving Village Momenkura Chita” was originally built as a cotton warehouse for Takeuchi Torao Shoten between the late Meiji and early Taisho periods. In 1994, the Okada Townscape Preservation Society was formed, and in 1995 the cotton warehouse was reborn as “Handweaving Village Momenkura Chita” to pass down the tradition of cotton and weaving to future generations. In 2014, it was registered as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property (building). Visitors can experience weaving Chita cotton and create handmade items such as coasters and mats. 【Saki-ori Coaster】 Old cloth is torn into thin strips and woven as weft threads. You can experience weaving in a short time. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to weave. 【Placemat / Table Center】 Recommended for those who want to enjoy weaving slowly or challenge themselves with a larger piece. It takes about two hours to complete. For medium-sized mats, even beginners can weave in about one hour.
